We already had multi center load balancing, but all 3 centers in the East Coast 1 region went down. Next we want to look at multi-region balancing.

Wow… Amazon’s ECx DCs are a total mess. They took significant portions of Zynga and Splunk down for nearly a full day back at the beginning of the summer. I’m not close enough to anybody on that side of AMZN to know what’s up: did they give you any solid explanation for how an ostensibly redundant DC could have a “power failure”? Because, where I come from, that absolutely does not happen barring a natural disaster.

This is a great example of what I like most about start-up culture. In addition, I believe this attitude can also be found at the individual level of a company. It can be a willingness among employees to help out on a project that is way outside of their normal job responsibilities, or even taking a new co-worker out to lunch to make him or her feel more welcome. Extending a helping hand at all levels is the mark of a quality company.
